Set Up Multi Currency Auto-Detection

Another benefit of this update is how incredibly simple it is to set up. Below I’ll walk you through the brief and straightforward process of setting up the Multi Currency add-on and configuring the auto-currency detection options in WordPress.

Step 1. Install/Update Multi Currency Addon

If you haven’t already, install and activate the Multi Currency extension on your EDD site. Note that this extension is only available to EDD Pro users Lite users can get it by upgrading to any of the Pro plans.

Go to Downloads » Extensions, search for Multi Currency, and select Install.

It activates automatically.

If you already have it installed and activated, verify that you’re using the latest version (1.2.0).

Make sure that you’ve also set your store’s default currency (Downloads » Settings » General » Currency).

Step 2. Enable Auto Currency Detection

Next, locate the Multi Currency settings under Downloads » Settings » Payments » Multi Currency from your WordPress admin.

Within the Currencies settings panel, you can choose and add the currencies you want to support from our list of 200+ options.

The new Auto Detect Currency setting is on the second half of the screen. Click to enable this setting.

With this option turned on, the currency is auto-detected based on the geo-location of the user. If a currency isn’t detected for their location, it sets it to your store’s default currency.

With Auto Detect Currency enabled, you can also activate Force Detected Currency.

This option hides the currency selector display widget from visitors so that they can’t choose or change the auto-detected currency. It forces them to use the default currency that’s detected and decided for them.

Step 3. Configure Exchange Rate Updates

Gone are the days of selecting and adding API keys for services that provide exchange rates. Forget the hassle of tracking exchange rates—Multi Currency updates them for you automatically, right out of the box.

Simply select the toggle next to Auto Rate Updates, and it’s handled for you.

From the Update Frequency dropdown, you can choose how often to update the exchange rates.

Options include Once Hourly, Once Daily, Twice Daily, or Once Weekly.

Remember to save your changes when you’re done.

Now, from the front end of your site, customers should see a small currency indicator showing their detected location and local pricing.

They can still manually switch currencies if needed, but most won’t have to.

Suppose you use Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) to sell digital products (such as eBooks, software, or online courses) to customers in an EU or UK country. You are legally required to collect this tax, regardless of your business’s physical location.

Key Requirements for EU/UK Digital Sales:

• Charge Correct VAT Rate: Apply the specific VAT rate based on the buyer’s country of residence.
• Validate VAT Numbers: Validate the buyer’s EU VAT number to apply the reverse charge mechanism, where the buyer is responsible for accounting for the VAT.
• Maintain Records & Reports: Keep detailed records of all transactions and submit regular VAT reports to the relevant tax authorities.

Once you enable VAT, EU tax rates are added to your site automatically.

VAT Number Validation at Checkout

Easy Digital Downloads integrates real-time VAT number validation directly into the checkout process. This field is contextually displayed only for customers in EU/UK countries, maintaining a clean checkout experience for others.

Upon entering a VAT number, customers can validate it instantly without leaving the checkout page. When a valid VAT number is entered, EDD automatically performs the following:

• Instant Validation: EDD validates the VAT numbers against the appropriate authority.
• Dynamic Tax Application: Applies the correct tax rate or, crucially, applies a reverse charge (zero tax) if the valid VAT number indicates a transaction where the buyer is responsible for VAT.
• Ensures Compliance: The automated application of reverse charges significantly simplifies compliance for sales within the EU/UK.

Seamless Order, Invoice & Report Management

Easy Digital Downloads enhances record-keeping and reporting for VAT compliance. VAT-related information is automatically captured and integrated across your store.

A dedicated VAT section is added to all orders, accessible under the Order Details » VAT tab on an individual order page.

This information can also be displayed on customer receipts by enabling the Order Details option in EDD VAT settings.

Invoices: VAT details, including your company’s VAT information and relevant order data, are automatically integrated into EDD invoices.

Comprehensive Reports: New VAT reporting features are available for streamlined accounting. You can access and export detailed reports on:

• Orders with VAT collected.
• Orders with reverse charges applied.

Find and export these reports under Downloads » Reports » Export. Then locate the EU VAT and EC Sales List sections.

How to Enable EU VAT Handling for EDD

Enabling EU VAT handling in Easy Digital Downloads is a straightforward process, taking less than 5 minutes. Follow these steps to get started.

Prerequisite: Ensure that you have a valid and active Easy Digital Downloads (Pro) license key and that you’re using an updated version of the EDD Pro plugin. You can check under Dashboard » Updates in your WordPress admin area.

Step 1. Enable Taxes & EU VAT Handling

Before you’re able to enable and configure EU VAT settings, you need to have taxes enabled.

To do that, go to Downloads » Settings » Taxes from your WordPress dashboard.

Select the option to Enable Taxes.

Then toggle to Enable VAT handling and validation.

Remember to select Save Changes.

A new EU VAT setting will appear under the Taxes » General tab. 

Step 2. Configure Your EDD EU VAT Settings

After you turn on the EU VAT setting and save your changes, go to the EU VAT tab that’s now under Taxes.

This is where you can configure the EU VAT handling and validation settings.

The first option is Automatic Rates. If you choose to enable rates updated weekly, you’ll see a note that it’s scheduled to happen.

Alternatively, you can use the ‘legacy’ tax rates.

Next, add your business information. Enter your company’s VAT number and select your country of VAT registration.

For  EDD Pro users with active licenses, VAT validation runs through our premium servers automatically — no need for external API keys or additional service fees.

Click on Save Changes when you’re done.

Step 3. Test Your EU VAT Validation

Your store is now ready for VAT handling and validation. But it’s important to verify that everything is working as it should.

With VAT handling enabled and taxes registered for EU countries, visit your store’s checkout page.

Select various EU/UK countries as the billing country to ensure the VAT number field appears automatically. It should not appear for non-EU/UK countries.

Enter a test VAT number.

Once you enter the VAT number, click the Validate button.

If numbers are invalid, the field lets customers know right away—no guesswork.

Observe Reverse Charge Logic

• If a VAT number is valid and the checkout country does not match your store’s base country, a reverse charge should be applied, and no tax collected on the order.
• If the checkout country matches your store’s base country, tax collection depends on the Reverse Charge in Home Country? setting. For example, if your company is in France and a French customer enters their VAT number, tax would be collected unless this specific setting is enabled.

Other EDD Updates

There are a handful of other improvements in this update, including:

Set Up Square Payments in Minutes

Getting Square payments set up in WordPress and your Easy Digital Downloads store is quick and easy.

First, if you haven’t already, update your Easy Digital Downloads plugin to the latest version (3.4.0 or newer). You can do this by going to Dashboard » Updates from your WordPress admin area.

Next, navigate to Downloads » Settings. Under Payments, go to the Square tab and select Connect with Square.

Then you can either create a new Square account or select Sign in to use an existing account.

You’ll be guided through a secure process to authorize your Square account.

Once it brings you back to the WordPress settings screen, you may need to connect Square webhooks to Easy Digital Downloads to complete the process.

Refer to our Square Payments documentation for step-by-step guidance.

Once successfully connected, go to Downloads » Settings » Payments to enable Square payments under Active Gateways.

Click on Save Changes. That’s it — you’re ready to start accepting payments with Square!

New Stripe Payment Methods Added

Offering customers a variety of payment options is essential for digital sellers. It improves customer convenience and helps you reach a broader audience. A wider range of payment methods can help reduce cart abandonment, boost conversion rates, and increase overall sales.

Previously, EDD users could use Stripe to accept bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and Apple Pay/Google Pay.

Managing Stripe Payment Methods

EDD enables most Stripe payment methods by default. You can manage them directly within EDD settings in WordPress.

Just go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » Stripe. Under the Payment Methods section, you manage which methods are turned on/off.

Certain payment methods may require you to request access to turn them on. If so, you can handle this from your Stripe dashboard. Go to Settings ︎ in the top right corner, then click followed by Payments.

Under the Payment Methods tab, locate the payment method you want to enable and select Turn on. If further configuration is needed, it will be listed as Pending until approved.

Upgrade EDD and Add More Payment Options

Update to EDD 3.3.5 is a simple and effective way to enhance your online store and provide customers with a more convenient payment experience.

Go to Dashboard » Updates from your WordPress admin area to upgrade to the latest version.

We’ve also added two new Email Tags specifically for refunds which include the unique refund ID as well as the amount that was refunded.

Detailed Email Logs

Gain valuable insights into your email communication with a comprehensive log of all emails sent to customers by EDD. This log is available under the new Emails section: Downloads » Emails » Logs:

This log allows you to track which emails were sent, when they were sent, and to whom.

Order Fees Tag

Include order fees within your email templates using a new dedicated tag. This ensures your customers have a complete picture of their purchase details.

Stripe “Early Fraud Warning” Email Alerts

Stay ahead of fraudulent purchases and avoid Dispute Fees by getting emailed when Stripe’s Early Fraud Warning is triggered. With Stripe’s powerful machine learning, you can be notified when Stripe identifies a new order as suspicious. This gives you the chance to review the order and process a refund before the cardholder files a dispute, saving you time and money.

• The Disable Purchase Receipts and Auto Register extensions are now considered legacy features and will be deactivated. This functionality is now built directly into EDD.
• Be aware that some settings screens may look slightly different due to a visual update for checkboxes. They’re now toggles for a cleaner and more modern feel.
• Updated translation-ready strings to make EDD easier to translate.

We’ve also made significant improvements to emails.

Consolidated Commissions Emails

Say goodbye to multiple emails per order. With the upcoming release of Easy Digital Downloads 3.3.0, you’ll have all new email controls available to you.

In previous iterations of the Commission extension, each download that was purchased would generate its own email.

Now, vendors will receive a single email summarizing all the commissions for an order:

Note that this feature is not enabled by default. The option to turn it on is located under Downloads » Emails then click Commissions Earned on an Order:

Simply toggle the setting at the top of the screen to enable the consolidated commission emails feature and click the Save button. 

Enhanced Commission Insights & Visibility

The next major update included in the Commissions 3.6 release is the addition of two new email tags.

The first is a tag that displays a vendor’s pending (unpaid) commission amount. The second new email tag shows the vendor’s lifetime commissions earned:

This provides a clearer picture of their overall earnings.

It also helps encourage active vendors. This level of insight shows vendors exactly how their efforts are paying off.

Today, we‘re excited to announce the latest version of Easy Digital Downloads: EDD 3.2!

This major update introduces a handful of impressive and long-awaited features, including:

Updates for Better Discount Management

Much of the focus of this latest EDD release has been on implementing solutions for better, quicker, and easier discount management. We’re super excited about these changes and know you will be too.

Improved Discounts List Views

The biggest updates included in EDD 3.2 are enhancements surrounding discount codes that help store owners more quickly and smoothly manage discount codes.

First, we updated the Uses and Status columns. When a discount code is limited, the Uses column now shows its maximum uses and how many times/the percentage it has been used. Codes with unlimited uses have an infinity symbol (∞):

In addition, Status is now its own column and gives you the following options:

• Active
• Scheduled
• Inactive
• Expired
• 100% Claimed

Rather than automatically categorizing maxed-out codes as Inactive, they’re now labeled as 100% Claimed. This lets you quickly understand when it’s time to archive a code..which brings us to our next EDD 3.2 improvement.

New ‘Archive Discounts’ Feature

With the release of EDD 3.0, it was not possible to delete discount codes that had been used. Though this was meant to help keep accounting in order, over time, the accumulation of codes can lead to a crowded and confusing discount area that’s difficult to search and manage.

This latest EDD update includes a new Archive feature:

You can move a code from the main list to a separate Archive area. This helps you immediately clean up your discount area and save time.

Archived discounts cannot be used, and are removed from the default discount lookups to help improve performance. You also have the ability to unarchive and restore codes whenever needed.

Ability to Set Discounts for Product Variations

EDD 3.2 includes improvements for adding and editing individual discounts. One of the most notable is the option to set the Download Requirements for a new discount code to different variations of a product.

Previously, if you had variable-priced products, you could only apply the discount amount on the product as a whole, not the individual variations of it:

Now you can define a specific Price ID that the discount code is valid for. In other words, you can assign different discount amounts on different price variations of a product:

Let’s say you’re selling a digital album at three price variations (Standard, Deluxe, and Exclusive). Rather than only being able to use one discount for all three versions, you could set the amount according to the product price point. For instance, a 5% discount for the Standard album and a 15% discount for the Deluxe album.

Option to Include/Exclude Product Category

Another way EDD 3.2 can help you save time creating, editing, and managing discount codes is by letting you include or exclude a product category from a discount.

For example, if you have a lot of products that you want the discount to work (or not work) for, rather than selecting each individual download, you can just choose the entire category.

New Discount Code Generator

Another improvement included with EDD 3.2 is the new Generate Code button. This feature, available only to EDD Pro users with a Personal Pass or higher, is added to the Code field when you’re creating a new discount:

This tool has a password-like User Interface (UI). You can pick a prefix and length, and specify whether it should include letters and/or numbers. It automatically generates a unique discount code that hasn’t been used on your site before.

Order Dispute Handling Improvements

EDD 3.2 also brings a few improvements to Orders — more specifically, dispute recording.

The new On Hold status is primarily used to automatically detect dispute payments.

When a customer disputes an order with their bank, the dispute goes to the payment gateway (such as Stripe or PayPal Commerce). The gateway then lets us know that it’s a dispute record and to set the order On Hold.

On-hold orders can’t have products downloaded, so those customers initiating the dispute can’t access the files. This can help prevent fraudulent purchases on your site.

On the EDD View Order Details screen, there’s now a note recorded that includes a Dispute ID linking to the gateway. You can use it to view details about the dispute, upload evidence, etc.

This is just the beginning of improvements we want to make to help give users better insight into order dispute handling directly within WordPress/EDD admin. Keep an eye out for more updates in the future!

New ‘Service’ Product Type Added

In previous versions of EDD, users have been able to use the free Downloads As Services addon to sell something that doesn’t have files. The extension gives you the option to hide the default ‘No Downloadable Files’ messages that otherwise display with these products.

With the 3.2 release, we merged this functionality into EDD Core. Now when adding or editing a download, you can simply select Services as the Product Type on the download page:

This feature is available to both EDD Lite and Pro users.

Other Big Changes & Updates

Before we wrap up, there are a few more notable changes and updates worth mentioning.

• We’ve been able to get up to 20% performance improvement in the EDD checkout and customer interactions. There were a few ways we did this. We optimized both our codebase and database. Additionally, we deferred the sending of purchase confirmation emails to slightly after the customer completes their order (to avoid blocking the purchase process).
• AmazonPay is now officially deprecated. Stores with it enabled can still use it. But you’ll see a deprecated-related message with the suggestion to move to Stripe or another gateway.
• Easy Digital Downloads now requires PHP 7.4+/WordPress 5.8+ and is PHP 8.1 compatible.
• The per-transaction fee for “Pay as you go” Stripe payments is now 3%. To remove “Pay as You Go” pricing, upgrade to and Extended Pass, and activate your license key.

Another massive improvement included in the EDD 3.1.1 release is the Stripe Universal Payment Elements integration. This feature cuts the amount of work needed for processing payments in half, resulting in a smoother and even more reliable checkout.

The Stripe Link feature offers a much safer and faster way to integrate with Stripe.

The payment element on the Checkout page offers the option to Save your information to pay faster with Link. Users can securely enter and save their info with Stripe to streamline future purchases. The cards added on Link work on any site that supports Stripe Link.

After you enter your email address into the designated checkout field, Stripe sends a verification code text message:

Once the code is entered, the credit card(s) used on other sites are automatically added. You can choose which one to use, update existing cards on file, and add a New payment method:

New users will automatically use the Payment Elements; existing EDD users can opt in when ready.

If you’re currently an EDD + Stripe user, you don’t have to worry about losing any existing checkout customizations when upgrading to EDD Pro or testing the payment element integration in a staging environment. The default Card Element setting is left as is, letting you easily switch to Payment Element when you’re ready.

Our EDD Stripe documentation includes a Migrating to Payment Elements section that lets you know what changes you may have to make in the transition.

This Payment Element also supports Apple Pay & Google Pay support out of the box. EDD used to offer this as a separate Express Checkout option, but now it’s included directly within the same Payment Element.

Note that this feature is only available to users using Stripe Connect to integrate their Stripe account with Easy Digital Downloads.

Enhanced Extension Installation Experience

The EDD Extensions screen lets you view, browse, & search EDD add-ons. But EDD 3.1.1 brings some key enhancements that make exploring and installing extensions even easier.

Users without a paid license can see the Upgrade Now button beneath all of the extensions:

If you need to enter a pass key, you can click on Add your license key now link to enter & verify it directly within WordPress. Here, users can easily upgrade to EDD Pro:

The available extensions will vary depending on which EDD Pass you have.

For Personal, Professional, and Extended Pass holders, included extensions appear at the top of the Extensions screen with the Install button. Extensions that aren’t included are shown further down with an Upgrade Now option.

This new interface streamlines the process of installing EDD extensions. Unlike with previous EDD versions, you won’t have to leave your WordPress site and go to the EDD site to download an extension zip file.

After installing an extension, you can activate/deactivate it using the toggle switch:

In addition, you can click on the gear icon in the top right-hand corner to access the installed extension’s settings.

New & Improved EDD Blocks

EDD 3.1.1 introduces two blocks: User Downloads and Checkout.

The EDD User Downloads block replaces the download history shortcode. With the shortcode, the download history element and its pagination tended to be a bit clunky. It was redundant & would list items even if they didn’t have a download file:

The new EDD User Downloads block is a lot cleaner & intuitive:

It lets you:

• Show/Hide a search form (EDD Pro only)
• Show/hide Product Variations
• Hide Products With No Files, with the option to add/display text to show if there are no files

Technically, the EDD Checkout block isn’t new. But with the latest EDD 3.1.1 update, this Checkout block is the default element on the Checkout page instead of the previously used downloads checkout shortcode.

The default Checkout Block includes the Item Name/Price, a place to enter a discount code, personal info, and the card payment elements:

Note that the Payment Elements still work with the Checkout shortcode. It just doesn’t look as good as it does with the Checkout Block.

GeoIP Support at Checkout to Auto-Fill ZIP

Another exciting new feature included with EDD 3.1.1 (for Pro users) is GeoIP location support at checkout.

The Billing Zip/Postal Code field on the checkout form fields automatically populates based on your location without you manually inputting it:

This can be incredibly helpful when it comes to taxes, as the taxes will automatically be applied based on the location of the user (if it’s relative).

  Today, we‘re happy to announce Recurring Payments version 2.11.8!

This release makes creating and managing discount codes and selling subscriptions easier than ever. We’re super pleased about this update because it includes awesome new features, some of which you (or other EDD users) may have specifically requested!

Let’s take a look at some of the most significant improvements:

Offer One-Time Discounts Codes on Individual Basis

In the past, discount codes in Easy Digital Downloads were essentially all or nothing. You had two main options. You could make it so that all discounts apply to:

1. Only the initial (first) payments of subscriptions
2. All payments (every renewal)

This is still an option. If you go to Downloads » Settings » Payments » Recurring Payments, you’ll find the One Time Discounts option:

If you select this box, by default, all your discount codes will apply only to a subscriber’s first (initial) payment. The discount(s) won’t be applied to subsequent subscription payments, such as monthly renewals.

But with the new Recurring Payments update, you’ll now also have the option to configure this setting on an individual discount basis.

You can create/edit a discount (Downloads » Discounts). Then, under the new Discount Renewal Orders setting, decide whether to make it for the first subscription payment or the lifetime of the subscription:

You can leave it set to the Store Default (currently is First Order and Renewals). This means the discount will be applied to all subscription payments.

The First Order Only option will apply the discount to the initial payment but not the following renewal orders. This can be useful for promotional offers. For instance, you could offer a 50% discount to new or first-time subscribers.

You can use the First Order and Renewals option for lifetime subscription discounts. Perhaps you have a partnership program and want to give those members a discounted rate for both the initial and renewal payments. This setting lets you do that.

Building this capability into the Recurring Payments extension means more flexibility with using discounts on your website. You can strategically offer them to customers to help boost sales and conversions.

Export Subscriptions for Detailed Reporting

Another exciting new feature is the ability to export subscriptions to a CSV file, which can help with reporting. Exporting this information can help you analyze and visualize your data in a spreadsheet. You can use CSV files to create custom reports and combine the data with other analytics.

CSV files also make it easy to share the data with others. Users can open the file in their preferred spreadsheet program (Excel, Spreadsheets, etc.) to view the data.

EDD lets you export reports for earnings, customers, products, etc under Downloads » Reports » Exports.

With the latest version of Recurring Payments installed, you’ll find a new Export Subscriptions section:

You can select a product/download to gather subscription information about. It also lets you filter the reports by subscription start/end date.

Access Customer Subscription Data Easily

Speaking of subscriptions, we’ve also updated the subscription management interface (Downloads » Subscriptions). In previous versions, the screen to add and manage subscriptions looked like this:

We rewrote the admin subscription forms to be more user-friendly, responsive, and accessible. With the new interface, the sections are arranged in a more organized and intuitive manner:

The new interface is more consistent with both WordPress and Easy Digital Downloads and makes it easier to add manual subscriptions.

Unlike with previous versions, it’s possible to add a subscription with a $0 initial amount. It also defaults the billing cycles for you so you don’t have to manually enter them.

The filter bar lets you sort subscriptions by payment gateway and subscription status. Subscriptions also now have their own tab when you’re viewing customer details:

Overall Performance Improvements and Fixes

We’re always working to ensure Easy Digital Downloads and its add-ons perform as optimally as possible. With this Recurring Payments update, we’ve made a handful of fixes to help boost its performance.

This includes resolving issues such as the Stripe express checkout causing PHP notices or the gateway causing a fatal error with one-time trials.

Now it’s also possible to:

• Purchase a product free trial with PayPal Commerce
• Automatically cancel active subscriptions when erasing a customer’s data
• Use the subscription_details email tag for purchase receipt emails
• Use the subscription_details, subscription_period, and subscription_term email tags for renewal and expiration emails

Buy Button: Boost Conversions With Easy-to-Embed CTAs

The EDD Buy Button is a simple block that adds the purchase button for a download:

You can use it anywhere and choose to show the price or not. It lets you display variable pricing and select the product for it from the drop-down menu.

It can be super helpful for creating product landing pages where you’re putting all the product info out instead of using the download pages that get built-in automatically. The block also supports custom CSS classes if you wish to add those.

Order History: Keep & Display Organized Records of Each Purchase

The Order History block reimagines what was previously called the Purchase History block with minimal responsive markup.

Before, the Purchase History shortcode would produce a list-style table:

The new Order History block presents a cleaner, card-view look:

It also supports all addons, including Software Licensing, Invoices, and Simple Shipping.

Products: Easily Showcase and Arrange Your Products Anywhere

In the past, the primary method of displaying downloads and products on pages was to use the downloads shortcode. This delivers a grid concept:

While the grid concept is still available, the EDD Products block offers a more flexible and dynamic environment with many more options:

Downloads can be paginated and ordered by various parameters. In addition, featured images, purchase forms, and pricing can be toggled off and on.

Registration Form: Simplify Registration to Increase Signups

The EDD Registration Form block is a simple block for registering users. You can add it to any page on your site as a CTA or use it to limit access to members-only content. It is similar to the existing shortcode, but supports more granular redirect options:

It supports reCAPTCHA and can be a great option to put on a page that you’re restricting access to.

Login Form: Optimize Your Login to Boost the User Experience

The Login Form block is the same concept as the Registration Form block. You can use it to ensure only users registered with your site can access certain pages (or the entirety) of your site. It’s similar to the existing shortcode, but it supports more detailed control over redirecting after login:

Additionally, when used with the new Login Page option in EDD settings, this replaces wp-login.php and features a full password reset flow. The Lost Password system supports reCAPTCHA.

Download Terms: Display Products Based on Specific Criteria

The EDD Download Terms block displays products based on the download categories or tags, similarly to the Products block.

You can customize the individual terms in several ways. For example, there are settings for changing the number of columns and the order, and options to show/hide empty categories, the title, thumbnail, description, count, etc.

Receipt: Automatically Provide Customers With Detailed Receipts

The Receipt block is a detailed receipt:

The order is similar to the shortcode, but all markup has improved responsiveness. It’s intended for use on the Receipt Page (renamed “Success Page”) and supports guest purchases.

When viewing the Receipt block as a user who is not logged in, you should experience one of two flows:

• If the purchase does not have a user ID associated (it’s a guest purchase), you can enter the purchaser’s email address to confirm the order and can view all details.
• If the purchase does have a user ID associated with it, then you will get a login form.

Confirmation: Give Customers Post-Purchase Info & Track Conversions

This block is very similar to the Receipt block but should not be used in its place, as it does not include hooks for details like subscription information. It is intended to be used with the Confirmation Page option and will display to users after completing the checkout process.

Unlike with the Receipt Page, files are displayed before pricing/totals. While similar, the Confirmation block/page should not be used interchangeably with the Receipt block/page. The Confirmation Page should be used separately for conversion tracking purposes.

Cart: Optimize the Shopping Cart to Reduce Abandonment

The shopping cart is the system on your eCommerce site that ‘holds’ items users want to purchase before actually going to the checkout. How it appears and functions on your site can influence the user experience.

The EDD Cart block is intended to replace the existing cart widget, although the parameters are different. The block can display as a mini cart (showing just quantity/total) or a detailed cart (showing more information, such as the itemized list with thumbnail images, product titles, and prices):

It also links to the Checkout Page, making it easy for your shoppers to complete their purchases.

Checkout (Beta): Create a Seamless Checkout to Boost Sales

We’re extremely excited to introduce the new Checkout Block and provide a modern take on the classic EDD Checkout screen. We’ve reordered the fields to improve conversations, improved the user context detection (only showing necessary fields to users), redesigned the payment method picker, and so much more.

We understand that the checkout experience is one of, if not the, most critical part of your store, so we are offering the checkout block as a ‘beta’ experience. This is to allow time to encourage you to test this new block and ensure that all of the amazing customizations you and other store owners have made to the EDD checkout are still compatible — without affecting your business.

Currently, this block is not added to a new site during the EDD install. Instead, the original checkout shortcode is used.

EDD 3.1 Core Settings & Feature Updates

The blocks aren’t the only new features to look forward to. Let’s cover some miscellaneous updates we’ve made with EDD 3.1.

Email Summaries: Receive Regular Store Reports

One of the new features added to EDD 3.1 is new email summaries. This lets you send weekly or monthly store reports to the admin or chosen emails that would look similar to this:

You can go to Downloads » Settings » Emails » Summaries:

Under Email Frequency, you can pick Monthly or Weekly from the drop-down menu. The date will respect the schedule of your store. So if your week starts on Monday, it will send on Monday.

For the Email Receipt, you can leave it as the admin email or select Custom Recipients. You can also send a test email or disable email summaries altogether.

Require Login to Download Files

Under Downloads » Settings » Misc » File Downloads, we’ve added a Require Login setting:

When this box is checked, if you (or one of your users) try to click a file download from an encoded link while logged out, you’ll be presented with a login page. Once logged in, it will automatically download the file for you. This feature is really helpful if you want to restrict or limit file downloads to registered or logged-in users only.

“Success Page” Is Now “Confirmation Page”

The Success Page has been renamed to Confirmation Page to differentiate it from the receipt. The receipt includes detailed information about the order, such as the order number, date, status, and total.

In previous versions of EDD, once buyers completed their purchase, they would be sent to the Success Page, which required the [edd_receipt] shortcode:

With EDD 3.1, there is a Receipt block and a Confirmation block. Each can be used to send users to their respective pages:

The Login Page has been added for sites that support blocks (minimum WP 5.8). You can assign the Login Page under Downloads » Settings » Pages:

The page that you set the Login Page as must use the EDD Login Form Block.

Enhanced Report Filtering

Another big update we have with this release is with Reporting. We no longer have just this month/Last Month filtering features. With EDD 3.1, we added more detailed views and filtering options to your overviews so you can get a more specific and granular view of your analytics:

For example, you can see changes by filtering by Quarter to Date and comparing to Previous period/ quarter/year/etc.

reCAPTCHA Keys Added

reCAPTCHA keys have been added to Downloads » Settings » Misc. This means that you can automatically enable reCAPTCHA for the lost password and the registration forms. In older EDD versions, you would have to use the Checkout Fields Manager extension.

New Purchase Button Colors

New color options have been added to Downloads » Settings » Misc » Purchase Buttons:

These use color pickers instead of the original CSS class names and will update all buttons that use the color classes throughout EDD.

New Receipt Tag

If you work on the development side of your site and want to add HTML or markers, this addition might be good to know. We’ve registered a new {receipt} tag that goes to the Receipt Page. When used, it will use “View Receipt” as the anchor text.

Before EDD 3.1, there was a {receipt_link} tag. This still exists. It adds a link so users can view their receipt either directly within the page or on a stripped-down version of the Receipt Page if, for whatever reason, they’re unable to view it correctly in their browser.

Combined with the Receipt block, the new tag should allow customers to view their receipt, regardless of browser session status.

Added View Receipt Link

The order history table in the admin now includes a View Receipt link so that any store manager/admin can view the customer-facing receipt:

Similarly to Invoices, store managers/admins can always view receipts. Before EDD 3.1, Only the option to view an invoice was offered on the order history table. Now you can quickly view both.

Today, we’re pushing out an update to our Checkout Fields Manager add-on. With this release (Checkout Fields Manager 2.2), not only can you dynamically update the checkout form, but it also secures the form from spam and abuse.

Let’s take a detailed look…

Smart Conditional Logic: Update Checkout Fields on the Fly

Easy Digital Downloads’ Checkout Field Manager lets you create a smart dynamic checkout form that enables you to collect ALL the relevant information you need from your customers.

With its smart conditional logic, your checkout form will dynamically show or hide fields based on customers’ selection and behavior while buying your product.

You can choose to show or hide the fields based on the following:

• Number of items in cart: The number of products added to the cart
• Cart subtotal: Total amount before discount
• Cart total: Total amount after discount
• Downloads in or not in cart: Show or hide fields when a certain product is added or not added to the cart
• User is logged in or not logged in: Display/hide fields based on the logged in status
• User role: Show/hide fields based on WordPress user roles, such as admin, subscriber, editor, and more.

There are many possible use cases of conditional logic in the checkout. For example, you can choose to show the file upload field if a customer purchases a certain product, ask for additional information if a customer hasn’t logged in, or prompt customers to agree to Terms & Conditions if the cart subtotal is less than a certain amount.

Conditional logic supports most field types, except for the core field items that are required like first name, last name, and user email.

reCAPTCHA v3: Secure Your Checkout From Spam and Abuse

Previously, if you enabled reCAPTCHA security on your checkout form, your customers will have to click the “I am not a robot” checkbox or even complete an image recognition challenge.

Checkout Fields Manager 2.2 supports reCAPTCHA v3, which is invisible, so your customers won’t see the reCAPTCHA field in your checkout form. That means you can combat bots and spam while also offering a frictionless checkout experience to humans.

Currency Switcher

Set the Exchange Rate Yourself or Automatically

EDD’s Multi Currency extension lets you automatically ‘set and forget’ the exchange rates with the Open Exchange Rates API. Leave it automatic and never have to think about it again. Select the Auto Update Exchange Rates option.

Simply leave the ‘Set the exchange rate manually‘ unchecked on any currency you want automated.

For the rates set to auto, you can choose how often you want to check and update the rates. Choose hourly, once daily, twice daily, and weekly.

Need to set one or two manually for some reason? Just do it. You can individually set an exchange rate yourself by clicking the ‘Set the exchange rate manually’ box and setting a rate.

Important Note:
If you are or were using the third-party Aelia Currency Switcher extension you can migrate everything over to Multi Currency. Be sure you have our Multi Currency extension activated before migrating from an EDD version 2 site to an EDD version 3 site.

Use Improved Reporting to Make Business Decisions

The first place you’ll see our hard work shine is with reporting. First, head over the Downloads > Reports you’ll find a new dashboard full of actionable data. These reports load blazing fast!

The focus of our new Reporting area is to empower you as a business owner to know where you’re at and how to make improvements. 

• Monitor and learn with 40 new reports accessible with one click
• The entire reporting interface has been redesigned from the ground up to give you the data you need, when you need it.

Each report view is designed to give you valuable insights that you can put to use right away.

For example, click on Customers and immediately see the average revenue per customer or who your top 5 customers are.

Manage Orders and Refunds with Ease

Managing orders in 3.0 is more consistent and reliable. 

In EDD 2.0 customer purchases were under ‘Payment History’. From now on we’ll call them ‘Orders’.

The Orders listing has a refined look with prominent order Number and visual Status makers.

Refunds

Issuing a refund has been redesigned to give more accurate reporting. Just click Edit to view/edit an Order. Next, click the Initialize Refund button. Select the items to refund, or all of them, and click Submit Refund. That’s it! The refund will begin processing.

Add and Organize Downloads Faster

Your Downloads (products) screen has refinements too. Easily access Categories and Tags right from the same screen.

Create and edit Downloads with the Block Editor! With the Block Editor you’ll be able to make beautiful product pages with visual layout controls.

Reorganized for Simplicity

The Downloads sidebar has been reorganized. Items are grouped by task.

There is a new status bar at the top of your WordPress Dashboard. Easily access reports, settings, store status, and more right from there.

Migration from 2.x to 3.0

When you upgrade to EDD 3.0 a simple migration process will run to update your store to the new database structure.

• Please make a backup copy of your database before running the upgrade, it’s safe, but not reversible
• Consider running the upgrade on a staging copy of your website first
• If you’re using the Aelia Currency Switcher plugin be sure to install and activate Multi Currency before the migration. Learn more here.

Command Line

For larger sites and advanced users, you can also run the upgrade via WP-CLI with this command:

wp edd v30_migration

What Is A Marketplace? Why Would I Want to Build One?

You may be wondering what exactly a marketplace is. You may be thinking that it sounds hard to do, or there may be no reason for you to try building one. But there are many reasons to consider it.

Building a marketplace = adding value for your current and potential customers

More products in your store make more sales possible. That’s one nice benefit for you if you build a marketplace.

But let’s think about your customer. There they are, busy running their business and looking for solutions to their problems.

And you save the day, providing valuable solutions to their problems with your products. You have found a niche. A little segment of the market where your skills and experience can really help others.

Once you have a store set up that is serving a niche, you’re in business! The next step is to continually add more value for your current and potential customers.

One way to add value is to offer other related products (solutions) to their other problems. The fastest way to add more products to your store is often to sell other creator’s products. You don’t have time to build everything. So sell what’s already out there.

Curate a group of products for your customers. Now your store is becoming a one-stop shop. A marketplace.

How An FES Marketplace Works

1. First use EDD + FES to set up a way for other creators to submit products to sell in your store
2. Review vendor products as they come in
3. Approve those you want to sell
4. When these items are sold, you make money, and you pay a commission to the vendor. You get to decide the terms of the revenue split, and control the entire customer experience!

The first thing you’ll notice when setting up a marketplace is that there is a lot of emailing involved.

The good news is that we have thought through all the emails for you!

Not only that, with Frontend Submissions 2.7 we have rebuilt the entire email experience to make it easier than ever. Let’s take a look.

All-new Email Experience

The FES emails are now located under Downloads > Settings > Emails > Frontend Submissions.

Here we have a redesigned view of all the emails needed to manage the frontend submission process. It’s easy to see each email’s status and click through to edit.

You can quickly enable or disable each email with just a click. The individual emails are ready to send, with sensible default text.

Or, edit their content with the rich text editor. Make use of a wide array of Template Tags that automatically insert things like first names, last names, post title (the name of the product) and so on. Click here for a full Template Tag guide.

Redesigned Menu Structure

We’ve made Frontend Submissions more tightly integrated with Easy DIgital Downloads. FES has its own menu item for general settings under FES. The email settings have been moved under Emails as shown above.

Vendor Forms

Another big component of building a marketplace are the forms. You’ll need a form for vendors to register on your site, submit products, and create a profile. FES has all this built and ready for you.

FES includes a powerful form builder for customizing each form just as you need it for your business.

Version 2.7 has a lot of behind-the-scenes improvements. The form editing interface has been updated with better accessibility, validation, and HTML 5 markup.

Today we are excited to announce Git Download Updater version 1.3.

Here are the highlights of this version:

• Other stability enhancements

What Is Git?

First let us explain git, just a bit, if you are not familiar with it. (Sheer poetry)

Git is a version control system for digital documents and computer code. It keeps track of every little change you make to your software product or codebase. It helps remote teams stay in sync with each other as they continuously make improvements.

With git you create a single place where all your files and code are stored; it’s called a repository. Most people call them ‘repos’ for short. Then, git automatically keeps track of any little changes committed to the repo. You know who did what, when, and why (via commit comments).

Git is used by software developers of all sorts. Other people use git too, to collaborate on writing books, creating music, maintaining legal documents, even designing 3D models.

Two of the most popular platforms for storing git repositories online are GitHub and Bitbucket.

Now, back to the highlights.

Deploy Software Packages Using GitHub’s Releases

In previous versions of Git Download Updater, you selected a GitHub tag and the plugin then downloaded the entire source code of the repository to attach to the product. This had some frustrating limitations. Using Composer? That meant you had to commit your /vendor/ directory—yuck!

In this new version, you can now select any of the assets uploaded to the corresponding GitHub release. This gives you more control over how files are organized and deployed.

As an example: you can use GitHub actions to build your production-ready zip file, attach the zip file to the release, and select this asset using Git Download Updater. You can work faster and prevent errors. Your customers get more reliable software.

Improved Error Handling and Messages

There are a lot of moving parts between your Downloads (products) and your git repos. Sometimes something can go wrong. Often it’s just a little configuration error that is quick to fix.

We’ve added more detailed feedback to error messages to help you get back on track. It can be faster if you understand the error and fix it yourself. But don’t worry, our support team is also always here to help!

Other Stability Enhancements

We’ve also made a dozen or so behind-the-scenes improvements:

• The minimum PHP version is now 5.6.
• Improved compatibility with PHP 8.
• The new/edit download interface has been further updated to be consistent with the WordPress admin.
• The transient to store the list of repositories is now stored indefinitely, but can be manually refreshed.
• The warning modal has been updated for improved accessibility.

• A third “Minimal” style allows you to drop the lines if that is your preference.
  

Fully Customizable Invoices

The invoices are built with HTML, so you or a designer have the option to fully customize the style with CSS. Developers will appreciate the hooks available to change the output.

All this means you can tailor invoices to best suit your customers’ wants and needs. Those professional details go a long way to building trust and making your customers become repeat customers.

Improved Invoice Workflow

The Invoices extension has always allowed both store owners and customers to adjust the customer information on an invoice.

This is so a customer can include important information, for example; full customer address, or a VAT or tax number.

The workflow for Invoices used to look like this:

1. Click Generate Invoice
2. Fill out form to make edits to the invoice
3. Submit the form
4. View the Invoice

We wanted to improve that and make it more intuitive. We also have made the edit step an option that site owners can enable or disable.

Now the workflow for Invoices is:

1. Click View Invoice
2. The customer sees the invoice
   • Optional: Allow user to edit invoice

This is easier and more intuitive for customers. It has the added benefit of allowing you to disable customer invoice editing if that’s a feature you do not need.

All of this means you can give your customer self-serve access to attractive invoices for their records. This saves you time and labor in customer support.

The ease of use and transparency on your store will encourage customer loyalty.

Secure (Tokenized) Invoice Links for Easy Access

The custom URL used to view invoices has been updated to allow secure access to invoices. This means customers can view their invoices, without logging in, if they have the secure link.

Customers can share the invoice with their accountant or tax preparer with no fuss. Or they can easily access a nice printable invoice at any time, even if they are not logged in.

This is much more convenient for your customers. They just click and view.

This is much better than clicking, trying to log in, forgetting their password, resetting password and getting frustrated.

(I know, that never happens to you because you remember all your passwords on all your sites ).

When you make things convenient for your customers, you are developing customer loyalty.

One-click PDF Generation

You can now generate and download a PDF invoice with one click. They will have the styling you chose from the 3 Style Presets.

Merging of Invoices and PDF Invoices into One Extension

The best features of PDF Invoices are now a part of Invoices 1.3. So we think it will be more simple if we just roll these two extensions into one.

Everyone using either extension will have access to all features. There’s no more wondering which EDD Invoice extension is the best for your use case. Sweet deal!

Perfect. None of your data will be affected. You just get more features!

If you have a PDF Invoices license, you can now log in to your account and grab Invoices any time you want. It’s yours to use as long as you keep your license subscription active.

All you have to do is log in to your EDD account area. Look for File Downloads. Next, look under Files and grab the Invoices ZIP file.

If you have an EDD Pass you can find Invoices under View My Downloads in your account area:

Remember: with the release of the Invoices extension version 1.3 we are recommending all users of the PDF Invoices extension switch over to the Invoices extension.

The New Reviews Block

The most exciting feature in Reviews 2.2 is the Reviews Block.

The Reviews Block makes it simple to add reviews to your product pages. Here’s how it works. When you are editing a post or page with the block editor, go to the + button on the top left.

Search for or scroll down to the block called Reviews and insert it into your page.

You can select which product and which review you want to add to the post. The review, or reviews, are added to your post with professional styling.

Not using the block editor yet? Don’t worry.

Improved Structured Data for Rich Search Results

Have you ever Googled for an eBook, movie, or another product and saw additional details about a product in a special box?

That’s called Rich Snippets, and they can help you get higher rankings, more clicks, and of course more sales.

With our Reviews extension, we automatically add improved schema markup on your product pages, so your website can stand out in Google.

For example, let’s say you are selling an eBook called ‘The 1 Hour Workweek’ on your site. Here is your search result page without Reviews.

Now, here is your rich search result page with Reviews.

Which of these two search engine results would you rather have? The rich search result page is far better.

Using the Reviews extension

Reviews allows you to collect and manage product reviews all within EDD.

Once installed, you’ll have a full-featured reviews system on your site. Customers can leave reviews, complete with a title, 1-5 star rating, and a comments field.

On your WordPress dashboard look for a new menu item on your left-side navigation. Under Downloads » Reviews, you’ll see each review as it comes in.

You can moderate the reviews the same way you manage comments on your WordPress site. There are options to approve, unapprove, or mark as spam.

The plugin will output everything as properly structured data. It will look good visually to your site visitors. It will also look good for the Google bots that crawl your site to create search results. You don’t have to code anything.

Background Story

Over the summer, Syed and I started chatting about what it would look like if Sandhills joined Awesome Motive. 

Given Awesome Motive’s track record of building popular plugins, their knowledge, resources, and Syed’s vision for the future, it made perfect sense.

Within just a few days, we had come to an agreement that allowed me to exit completely, so I can focus on my family while ensuring the entire Sandhills team joined AM.

My business partners: Chris Klosowski, Andrew Munro, and Phil Derksen will be joining AM as partners, and Chris will continue to lead Easy Digital Downloads.

I have a lot of respect for what Syed and the team has built at Awesome Motive, and I am confident that Easy Digital Downloads will only get better under their leadership.

Since Awesome Motive uses EDD at scale to power several of their large businesses most notably OptinMonster, WPForms, and MonsterInsights, they have built a lot of really cool internal tools and extensions that I know will benefit the community at large. 

What will happen to the Easy Digital Downloads Team?

As I mentioned, as part of this acquisition the Easy Digital Downloads team will be joining Awesome Motive.

My business partners: Chris Klosowski, Andrew Munro, and Phil Derksen will be joining AM as partners, and Chris will continue to lead Easy Digital Downloads.

I will stay on for the next month to help with transition before exiting the WordPress ecosystem to focus on my family. Read more in my personal blog post.

Today we’re excited to offer all users the ability to use the new PayPal Commerce integration for Easy Digital Downloads.

How can I use PayPal Commerce with Easy Digital Downloads.

As of Easy Digital Downloads 2.11, PayPal Commerce is included in Easy Digital Downloads core for free. With this version of the PayPal Commerce integration, you will be able to accept payments via PayPal just as you have been with PayPal Standard. Upon enabling the gateway, you need to connect your Easy Digital Downloads store to PayPal and you are done! No API Keys to copy and paste, no IPN URLs to setup.

How is PayPal Commerce better than PayPal Standard?

Increased reliability

PayPal Standard has long been the go-to integration for quickly accepting payments via PayPal. However, over the years many improvements have been made to the payment gateway industry. PayPal Commerce communicates with your Easy Digital Downloads store via webhooks instead of the older IPN method of communication. According to PayPal, the new PayPal Commerce API is 5% more reliable when it comes to notifying your site of new sales, which results in fewer payments left ‘pending’.

Simplified configuration

PayPal Commerce offers a quick and easy way to connect your Easy Digital Downloads store with your PayPal account. Gone are the days of copying API Keys, usernames, PDT Tokens, and IPN URLs. We’ve built the new integration to be a single click, and upon completion, we’ll verify all the necessary permissions and webhooks are configured, giving you peace of mind that your store can accept payments.

Customers trust PayPal

With PayPal being a world leader in payments, it is no surprise that customers like ours and yours trust the PayPal brand. With the PayPal Commerce integration for Easy Digital Downloads, your customers will have no surprises at checkout, as they are seeing the PayPal brand while they complete their checkout with you.

How can you start using PayPal Commerce today?

After you’ve updated your Easy Digital Downloads plugin to version 2.11, you can head over to your gateway settings and connect your store to PayPal.

Once connected to the new PayPal Commerce gateway, head over to your General gateway settings and be sure to enable the “PayPal” gateway, and you should see the new PayPal button on your checkout.

What if I use the PayPal Pro or PayPal Express extension?

As the PayPal Pro and PayPal Express integrations are also being deprecated in the future, every user who has purchased a license key for the PayPal Pro/PayPal Express integration will be given access to the new PayPal Commerce Pro integration based on their previous purchase. Any Professional Pass, Extended Pass, or All Access Pass holders will have access to this new integration as well, via their purchased pass. Just visit the Account page to view your license key and download the latest version.

The new PayPal Commerce Pro extension provides the same on-site card payment field experience that the PayPal Pro integration previously did, but in a new and more secure integration thanks to PayPal’s new checkout experience.

What is the difference between PayPal Commerce and the PayPal Commerce Pro extension?

The PayPal Commerce integration included with Easy Digital Downloads core allows you to accept payments via PayPal (just like PayPal Standard) as well as Subscription payments (with the Recurring Payments extension). The PayPal Commerce Pro extension opens up access to on-site card payments, a number of European gateway payment methods, and Venmo.

No. Jilt is providing a full template and cart export as part of the migration service.  Recapture will help you import all of this data as part of the concierge migration.  You may want to take some snapshots of your past analytics in Jilt, as this won’t be available in Recapture for any time longer than the last 6 months. But Recapture will support all of Jilt’s template format and cart data.

What about the cost of Recapture?

Recapture’s pricing is value-based on the additional revenue they recover for you each month, plus you can recover up to $500 on their platform at no cost to your store. Why should you recover abandoned carts?

If you’re not familiar with what abandoned carts are and why you need to address them, here’s the short version. Naturally, people who browse ecommerce sites don’t always end up purchasing. You’ve probably done this yourself. You might be researching, comparing prices, saving items to your wish list, etc. As of this writing, Baymard Institute estimates that 69.80% of all shopping carts are abandoned.

Some of these reasons for cart abandonment are a natural part of the online shopping experience and are unavoidable. But many of these reasons can be easily addressed. Some shoppers get discouraged at checkout by added taxes and fees. Others get impatient with the checkout or account creation process. Many simply get distracted while finishing their purchase and forget to come back.

For these folks, assuming they’ve already entered their email at some point, you can help them complete their checkout process by sending reminder emails in the form of an abandoned cart email campaign.

How much can you recover?

Suppose your store has 100 sales per month at $50 per order. That comes to a total of $5,000 per month. Let’s also assume your store has an average abandonment rate of 70% (meaning for every 10 customers that visit your store, 7 of them leave and never purchase). Based on your $5,000 a month and 100 sales, that means you’re missing out on 230 sales from those lost customers, (which amounts to $11,500 in lost sales). That’s a lot of missed opportunities.

What’s at stake here? Let’s say that of this $11,500 abandoned, you then manage to recover 5% of these sales. If we take 5% of $11,500, that comes out to an extra $575 per month. If we double that recovery rate (which is definitely attainable!) to 10%, suddenly that’s an extra $1,150 per month. With no additional work or traffic to your site required. It’s like free money that you’re missing out on. Some stores are even recovering between 15-20% or more!

Setting up Recapture

To get Recapture working with your EDD site, within your WordPress admin, simply navigate to Downloads > Settings > Recapture and click Connect with Recapture.

Alternatively, you can search for the “Recapture for EDD” plugin in your WordPress admin or download from the WordPress plugin repository.

After you install and activate the plugin, Recapture will walk you through the rest of the onboarding process. You can also consult the Recapture for EDD setup guide if needed, but you should be up and running fairly quickly.

Once your account is set up, you’ll want to activate the default email campaigns. Of course you can customize these as much as you want now or anytime later down the road.

What is SCA?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a European regulation that requires merchants use two methods of verification to authenticate customers’ identities. This is likely the beginning of many international regulations that endeavour to protect merchants and customers alike.

When SCA takes effect, a form of two-factor authentication will be required for most online card payments in Europe. From the 14th of September, European banks will decline payments that require SCA and do not have this additional authentication.

SCA applies to “customer-initiated” online payments within Europe. This means that almost all card payments and all bank transfers will require SCA.

SCA requires customers use at least two of the following three methods of verification:

• Something the customer knows (such as a password or PIN)
• Something the customer has (such as a phone or hardware token)
• Something the customer is (such as a fingerprint or face recognition)

Why is SCA important?

This new requirement is aimed at reducing fraud and making online payments more secure. This protects the merchant (that’s you), as well as the customer.

You can find the official SCA requirements in the Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS).

How SCA affects your EDD-powered store

For online purchases with a debit or credit card, SCA will apply to transactions where both the business and the cardholder’s bank are located in the European Economic Area (EEA).

Selling subscriptions? SCA will apply to the first payment, however recurring or ongoing direct debits or subscriptions are considered “merchant-initiated” and will generally not require additional customer authentication unless there is a change in the cost of the recurring payment.

Exemptions from SCA

Low-value transactions below € 30 will generally be exempt from SCA. However, if the customer makes five purchases or their total amount spent goes above € 100, SCA will be required.

Ultimately, the cardholder’s bank will deem whether or not a transaction will be exempt. Read more about possible exemptions.

What is EDD doing about SCA?

SCA readiness in Easy Digital Downloads is our top priority. The new update will include support for the new Stripe Payment Intents API.

Stripe Payment Intents API & SCA support

The Stripe gateway has been completely refactored to use the Stripe Payment Intents API instead of the old Charges API. The Payment Intents API complies with the Strong Customer Authentication regulation in Europe by adding support for 3D Secure when it’s required to complete the payment.

We’re finalizing how it integrates with our system, and are working to have SCA-related features implemented in EDD before September 14th (the original planned date) so you have time for configuration and testing.

*We are also monitoring a possible delay of the SCA enforcement. At this time we will be continuing to work towards the original date of September 14th. You can learn more about the delay on Stripe’s website.

Removing the Stripe Checkout modal

Unfortunately, Stripe is no longer recommending the use of this modal and they will not be updating it to support the Strong Customer Authentication requirements. As a result, we have decided to remove the current Stripe Checkout option from Easy Digital Downloads to ensure SCA compliance.

If you’re using the current Stripe Checkout then you will automatically be swapped over to our normal Stripe gateway when you update.

Will this affect my existing subscriptions?

As this is a design change only, it does not affect payment processing or renewals. Customers who have active recurring subscriptions that were created via Stripe Checkout will still have their renewal payments processed by Stripe and picked up by Easy Digital Downloads.

Updates to gateways

The following gateways will be updated for SCA. The exact release date is not confirmed just yet, but updates will be released as soon as they are ready:

• Stripe
• PayPal Pro

The following gateways will not receive updates for SCA support at this time. If you require SCA support, and use any of the below gateways that will not support SCA, you’ll need to switch to a gateway that has support for SCA:

• 2Checkout Onsite
• PayPal Payments Advanced
• Braintree
• Authorize.net

If you’re using the following gateways, no action needs to be taken. These gateways process payments offsite:

• PayPal Standard
• PayPal Express
• 2Checkout (not 2Checkout Onsite)

What do I need to do?

As Stripe adds SCA-related tools to their dashboard, you may need to configure a few items and/or update the version of the Stripe API leading up to September 14th. We’ll release more details as they become available, and if you have any questions, please let us know.

To get ready for SCA, you or your host will also need to ensure that your website is running on a server with PHP version 5.6 or greater. Additionally, when the Easy Digital Downloads update is released, you’ll need to update to the latest plugin version.

Easy Digital Downloads Blocks allows you to add a block that displays a grid of your downloads on your site, similar to the [downloads] shortcode already provided with Easy Digital Downloads. This block provides a visual representation of your downloads in the editor, showing you a real-time preview as you configure the various settings. A grid of Download Categories or Download Tags can also be shown instead of your products, or in addition to your products.

Display a grid of downloads

After installing and activating the EDD Blocks plugin, you can add the block to an existing page, or create a new page where you will display your products. There are three easy ways to add a Downloads block to your post or page:

1) Click the Add block icon in the menu above the editor area, and search for downloads. Click the Downloads icon and text to add the block.

2) Click the Add block icon in the editor area, and search for downloads. Click the Downloads icon and text to add the block.

3) Hover over the editor area until you see an Add block icon, then click into the editor area and start typing /downloads. Click the Downloads icon and text to add the block.

After adding a block, you can configure the settings and select which information and elements you’d like to show in your downloads grid. Choose to show the price, a Buy Button, a thumbnail, or more content. You can also select how many downloads should appear on a page and enable pagination, as well as order your downloads.

Display download categories and tags

If you’d prefer to display your downloads by category or tags, you can choose this from the Display drop-down menu. You can then configure which download details you wish to show, and how you’d like your products to be ordered.

The new WordPress editor also provides a shortcode block, so we’ve added a [download_categories] and [download_tags] shortcode to which you can add parameters for more granular control of your displayed products.

To use EDD Blocks, you’ll need Easy Digital Downloads and WordPress 5.0 or later. If you haven’t updated to WordPress 5.0 yet, you’ll need the latest version of the Gutenberg plugin.

Along with granting access to many extensions in a single purchase, these passes result in just a single license key that is valid for every extension included in the pass. For most store owners, the passes are a superior option for purchasing Easy Digital Downloads extensions that leads to a better overall experience.

There was a problem, however, that we did not anticipate. Even though the combined value of the extensions in each pass far exceeded the price tag of the passes, the price tag was too high. The passes were priced as follows:

• Personal Pass: $199
• Extended Pass: $399
• Professional Pass: $699
• All Access Pass: $899

Our expectation and intent in creating the passes was for store owners to be able to purchase access to multiple individual extensions in a more economical way, but that’s not what happened. Instead, store owners continued to purchase only the individual extensions they needed because the price tags of the passes were still too high.

It is clear that we made a mistake in our pass pricing, and so today we’d like to apologize for that and announce new, lower prices.

The pass prices have been adjusted as follows:

• Personal Pass: $99
• Extended Pass: $199
• Professional Pass: $299
• All Access Pass: $499

After quietly testing the new pricing for two weeks, we are happy with the results and it’s clear that the lower prices are working the way we hoped, so we can confidently say the new prices are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

If you purchased a pass before the prices were lowered, we are retroactively adjusting your subscriptions so they renew at the lower prices and offering partial refunds for purchases made in the last 60 days. Here are the changes you will see regarding annual renewal amounts:

• If you purchased the All Access Pass before June 19, 2018, your annual renewal will change from $899 to $499.
• If you purchased the Professional Pass before June 19, 2018, your annual renewal will change from $699 to $299.
• If you purchased the Extended Pass before June 19, 2018, your annual renewal will change from $399 to $199.
• If you purchased the Personal Pass before June 19, 2018, your annual renewal will change from $199 to $99.

Customers whom purchased a pass between June 1 and August 1, are eligible to receive a refund equal to the difference of the purchased price and the new price. To receive a refund, please contact our support team. Note, the deadline to request a refund is August 15, 2018.

It is our goal to make digital eCommerce simple and pain free. While we are far from perfect, as this pricing mistake clearly indicates, we are dedicated to doing right by our customers. Late last year we introduced our first Pass with the All Access Pass, a simple way to access all Easy Digital Downloads extensions with one purchase. While it was very well received, we understand that it doesn’t fit everyone’s needs.

That’s why we are expanding our purchase options to include new Passes that group specific extensions together and make them available in a single purchase. Once a Pass is purchased, not only are you granted a single license key that can be used for updates and support for all included extensions, but you can also download the extensions instantly, whenever you need them (as long as your subscription is active), at no additional charge.

• You may still use Easy Digital Downloads with no additional extensions.
• You may continue to purchase extensions individually.
• You are not required to purchase a Pass.
• You may purchase a combination of a Pass and individual extension(s). However, extension substitutions are not allowed within Passes.
• Currently, there is no upgrade option from individual extensions to a Pass (except for the All Access Pass, which already has an upgrade option for qualifying customers).

Additional details

After reading a few of these emails, you’ve probably noticed the term “personal data” used repeatedly. This is due to a new European Union (EU) regulation called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), designed to protect the personal data of individuals within the EU, as well as give those individuals more control over their personal data.

GDPR’s official implementation date is May 25, 2018. Businesses around the world (literally) have made strides to meet the new requirements by the implementation date. The emails you have received, whether explicitly mentioning GDPR or not, are most likely written to inform you of changes made to meet GDPR requirements.

As an Easy Digital Downloads user, it is likely that you need to meet GDPR requirements as well. Not only does the Easy Digital Downloads plugin collect information from customers that is categorized as personal data, but you may also be using other plugins or tools that collect personal data from your website visitors.

Your business does not have to be based in the EU for this new regulation to affect you. If there is a possibility that an EU resident will visit your website, you’ll want to be GDPR-compliant.

Below, we’ll discuss what this means for your website, what Easy Digital Downloads has done to help you meet the new requirements, and how to make sure you are taking advantage of all available tools.

Understanding GDPR

GDPR is a set of guidelines that regulate how data controllers (businesses that have your personal data) manage your personal data and what rights you have in regards to knowing what is done with your personal data as well as removing your personal data upon request.

Here’s a general list of requirements that must be met under GDPR:

• Disclose what personally identifiable information is collected on your website (via Privacy Policy).
• Disclose why your website collects the personally identifiable information (via Privacy Policy).
• Disclose how long personally identifiable information is retained for (via Privacy Policy).
• Disclose whether or not personally identifiable information is shared with third-party entities (via Privacy Policy).
• Provide access to personally identifiable information upon request (via export).
• Provide a means for erasure of personally identifiable information upon request.
• Inform individuals of their rights under GDPR (via Privacy Policy).

Meeting those requirements takes a specialized set of tools, detailed information in your Privacy Policy, and a clear understanding of what kind of data is being handled.

GDPR’s overall focus is to create a standard for personal data collection and handling.

WordPress and GDPR

Easy Digital Downloads is a WordPress plugin. While it collects personal data through functionality like the checkout system, WordPress still plays a significant role in not only collecting personal data, but also storing, managing, and using that data through your website’s ecosystem.

That said, WordPress itself has taken steps to provide the tools needed to meet GDPR requirements.

WordPress 4.9.6 Privacy and Maintenance Release

The first step towards GDPR compliance as a WordPress user is to update your website to WordPress 4.9.6 (or higher), which is a release focused mainly on functionality needed to meet GDPR requirements. You can read about the release here.

New tools for creating and displaying a Privacy Policy Page, allowing commenters to decide if their personally identifiable information will be displayed with public comments, and personal data handling have been implemented in this release.

The Privacy Policy Page functionality gives you the ability to designate one page as your Privacy Policy, link to that page automatically from your login and registration forms, and even copy suggested Privacy Policy text from plugins and themes that have taken the time to provide an overview of what kind of personal data is collected from your website visitors/users as they interact with your website (more on this later).

The data handling functionality gives you the tools needed to either export or delete personal data upon a user’s request. While WordPress itself is prepared to handle data according GDPR requirements, it is also extensible, allowing plugins and themes to include collected data in the export and deletion processes.

While it is possible for these tools to be implemented in a custom manner, we highly recommend that your first step to GDPR compliance is updating to the latest version of WordPress.

All Easy Digital Downloads GDPR enhancements are accessed through functionality provided in WordPress 4.9.6 or higher. Please update.

Now let’s have a look at Easy Digital Downloads and its tools for GDPR compliance.

Easy Digital Downloads and GDPR

Easy Digital Downloads collects personal data about customers, mainly through the checkout process and related functionality. Personal data includes things like name, email address, address (when necessary), IP address, and more.

While WordPress has provided tools to easily export and delete personal data, it does not automatically have knowledge of additional data collected by Easy Digital Downloads. Instead, we’ve worked to integrate our plugin with WordPress’ tools. Those enhancements are available in Easy Digital Downloads 2.9.2 (or higher).

Easy Digital Downloads 2.9.2 Release

The first step towards GDPR compliance as an Easy Digital Downloads user, once updated to WordPress 4.9.6 or higher, is to update Easy Digital Downloads to version 2.9.2 or higher. You can see the 2.9.2 Changelog here.

To make Easy Digital Downloads compliant with GDPR, we have made the following general enhancements:

• Added support for WordPress Core Privacy Exporter and Eraser, ensuring that all personally identifiable customer information is included in the WordPress export and delete processes.
• Added a sample template for WordPress Core Privacy Policy editor, providing you with suggested Privacy Policy text that outlines what personally identifiable customer information Easy Digital Downloads will collect, and why it is collected.
• Added new Privacy settings to the Easy Digital Downloads Settings screen, allowing more control over how your store handles personal data and how it displays your Privacy Policy to customers.

As you may be thinking, it can be quite difficult to maintain an accurate history of your business transactions if your customers are requesting that their information is erased. That’s a valid concern, which is why it is important to understand data anonymization.

Anonymizing customer data

In Easy Digital Downloads 2.9.2, all personally identifiable customer information has been structured so that exporting or erasing all of the data at once is an easy task. While exporting the data may require no change to the data itself, deleting data during erasure requests could disrupt the reporting history of your store. This is where we introduce data anonymization functionality, a method of encrypting or removing personally identifiable information. This allows us to only remove personal data while purchase amounts and other non-personal data remains.

Under GDPR, a customer has the right to request that all personal data be removed from your website. Our data anonymization functionality allows your store to maintain things like a historical payment records and financial data while anonymizing all personally identifiable customer information, effectively erasing a particular person or entity from your data history.

Using our tools, you can anonymize customer records, payment records (by payment status), file download history, and more. You may also choose to fully delete such data if you deem it necessary.

Easy Digital Downloads extensions that collect personally identifiable customer information have also been updated to be included in the export and delete functionality. If you have questions or concerns about an official extension, please feel free to open a support ticket.

Again, these tools are only available on WordPress 4.9.6 (or higher) and Easy Digital downloads 2.9.2 (or higher). For more information about Easy Digital Downloads GDPR tools, please see the documentation.

What you should do next

While this information may be new to you, making sure your website is GDPR-compliant does not have to be a complicated process. Get the ball rolling by following the steps below.

1. Do your own general research to learn more about GDPR. The European Commission’s Data Protection page is a great place to start.
2. Consider hiring legal counsel to help you meet all GDPR requirements based specifically on your business. General tools can only get you so far. It is up to you to ensure that your business is fully GDPR-compliant.
3. Before updating WordPress or Easy Digital Downloads, back up your database and files. If you need help performing a back up, see the WordPress Codex.
4. Update your website to WordPress 4.9.6 or higher. Familiarize yourself with the new tools and functionality.
5. Update your website to Easy Digital Downloads 2.9.2 or higher. Read the documentation to understand how to use the new enhancements.
6. Make any necessary adjustments to your Privacy Policy page and inform your users of the policy changes if necessary.

Eighteen months ago, the team here at Easy Digital Downloads started the process of migrating our support system from an open forum to using Help Scout to manage our interactions with users and customers. So far it’s been a tremendous improvement that has helped us to provide top-notch support at scale. The goal of migrating from an open forum to this email-based support channel was to be able to manage support threads easier, get better reporting to where we needed improvement, and offer a more personal experience.

Over the past year and a half, we have left the support forums available for viewing, but have restricted the addition of new topics and replies. In this time, much of the content that’s in these forum topics has become stale, incorrect, or irrelevant. Topics like these pose a few problems, including confusion on the current state of Easy Digital Downloads, its features, and offerings. It’s for this reason we’ve spent the last year focusing on updating, improving, and writing new documentation that is easier to maintain and update to be accurate with the most recent changes to Easy Digital Downloads. As we’ve been doing this, we have added automatic redirects for forum threads that have had documentation written or other resources created to meet the needs of the original issue. This ensures that readers who find the old forum threads are sent to an up-to-date documentation or product page with the relevant information.

In the last few months we have found over 100 forum topics that were either outdated, had been turned into features, or ended up becoming extensions. Each of these topics has had a redirect put in place to ensure customers still find the answers they’re looking for. These topics were not just selected by hand. We used our data to identify which forum topics were being viewed the most via organic search results and analytics, and focused on those first. With each of these topics, we read over the thread and either found a relevant documentation article, blog post, or product page that met the needs of the resolution, and setup redirects. You see, over time, we’ve been focusing on streamlining the customer experience of on-boarding, self-help, and support, but we noticed a trend. People would use search engines like Google, and end up on our support threads. Some of these threads either alluded to functionality that we’d already built or provided suggestions that were no longer relevant. This typically ended up in support tickets being opened by confused users. As with any documentation platform, the goal is to allow users to provide self-help for most tasks, and our forums are simply not cutting it.

Allowing the forums to remain visible is hurting both customers and our team. It is leaving a source of outdated information that results in lost time on both our end as well as the user’s end.

With that said, in the next two weeks, we will be taking any remaining forum topics and redirecting them to our documentation homepage at http://docs.easydigitaldownloads.com. Once the final redirects are put in place, the forums will be removed completely and will no longer be accessible.

When we first made the announcement that we were transitioning away from the forums, we said “No. The forums will never be deleted.”. Obviously we have reversed this decision and are doing it because we genuinely believe it is the best for everyone.

We have had many discussions about these forum topics and their value to the community as a team, and we fully understand some people will see this as a ‘removal’ of historical information related to our support. This is something we don’t take lightly and, while something we can sympathize with, we feel is outweighed by the need to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information possible to our users. Keeping the forum threads simply is not an option so long as they continue to reference out-dated and/or incorrect information.

As noted above, we will be leaving the forums available for viewing for a two week period, in order to allow anyone who has bookmarked a specific forum thread to go and save the information they find valuable to their own location.

Introducing Vendd for EDD

At the very top of the themes page, you’ll notice that we’ve put one theme in the spotlight, and for good reason. That’s Vendd, and it’s being released to you right now.

Vendd was built by the EDD team and its focus is to help you get the absolute most out of using Easy Digital Downloads to run your digital store. Not only has Vendd been designed to bring some of EDD’s more hidden features to light, it also supports a host of EDD extensions and third party plugins to take things a step further.

While it is more than capable of being used as a simple blogging theme, Vendd is packed with just the right features to run your digital marketplace. That’s right, I said marketplace. Full support for Frontend Submissions is baked right into Vendd.

Official Easy Digital Downloads Themes

Beneath Vendd you’ll find multiple themes that are built and maintained by the EDD core team. These themes, including Vendd, are distributed directly from this site and are guaranteed to be fully compatible with EDD.

He began his web development career by learning every HTML tag in one afternoon in 1994. PHP/MySQL entered the picture in 1999, and then he began a full time freelance career with WordPress in 2010. After spinning up a startup, becoming a super hero at XWP, and rolling out HeroPress, he decided he wanted to shift into more of an educational role in the WordPress community. Now he writes docs and speaks at any conference still willing to have him.

A week later I knew how hard it could be. I had picked Authorize.net as my merchant processor and after reading lots and lots and LOTS of documentation and talking with some people who knew how to work with Authorize.net, I quickly realized I was in over my head. That’s when I started looking around at other options.

I’d had enough experience with Drupal to know I didn’t want to go there but I knew some people who worked with WordPress and recommended it.

I did some looking around, and most of the eCommerce solutions I found for WordPress were built into themes. Even as a new WordPress developer I knew that committing my store to one theme forever was a bad idea. The only really viable looking plugin was called WP eCommerce.

The best at the time

The plugin was free with paid add-ons. I loved that, and it’s an excellent viable model still in use today.

I installed the plugin and entered some products. Everything seemed to be fine and the UI made sense, so I turned it over to the client for product input. After only a few hours I got a call. Products were losing details, they couldn’t be re-ordered, settings couldn’t be saved, the list went on and on.

Given that the plugin had commercial support I went looking for it. What I found puzzled me. The only way to gain access to paid support was by buying a Gold Plugin. It had a whole bunch of features; none of which I wanted. I asked if I could simply pay for support, and the answer was no.

Fair enough, I bought the plugin, installed it, and posted my questions.

Bad to worse

Nothing happened. A week went by. Then another week. I asked again if I was looking in the right place for support, but got no answer.

Support wasn’t getting me anywhere, so I decided to look at the code myself. I have never seen worse code before or since. I was horrified. There was no fixing it. By the time I fixed everything wrong with that plugin I’d have a whole new plugin.

I knew I was in a hole. At the time, I told the client there wasn’t a good way to get it done with WordPress. This caused me to develop a strong distaste for eCommerce, and avoided all projects involving it for years.

Moving ahead

Then a while back I heard that WooThemes had forked something called JigoShop, and made WooCommerce. I had never heard of either, but it made me really happy that someone was doing SOMETHING.

Then I read that a friend of mine was making plugins for WP eCommerce. He’s a very well respected developer in the community. I asked him about it privately, and mentioned that it was the WORST. He said “What? No! WP eCommerce is amazing!”

Then I had a real dilemma. One does not simply say “No, you’re wrong” to this developer. I was willing to accept that maybe they’d fixed everything, but I still didn’t want to work with eCommerce at all.

Finally getting it right

I’m not going to list every eCommerce plugin that’s come out in the last few years, but it has become obvious that a number of people are taking it seriously. Pippin made Easy Digital Downloads. WooCommerce has become a powerhouse. WP eCommerce really did turn things around and is now a solid offering. Given these great options, I was surprised to see iThemes come out with Exchange, but it too seems to be gaining traction, probably because it’s well written and has excellent support.

I’ve finally built a few stores, reviewed some plugins, and I have to say that the difference between now and 5 years ago is truly incredible. Not only can we actually DO proper eCommerce these days, the power and flexibility of the available options is simply exploding.

These days we have:

• not just PayPal, not just a few, but dozens of payment gateways
• nearly all common shipping options
• consistent, high quality support from the developers
• an ever expanding ecosystem of add-ons

This isn’t just from one vendor, but from ALL of them.

Everyone’s experience with affiliate marketing will undoubtedly be different so I can’t give you a magical number right off the bat. Since priority support is a paid service, we want all priority support customers to get their money’s worth and for them to be happy with the support they receive.

Over the last two years, we’ve noticed a couple of dynamics that have surprised us.

When we created Priority Support, we thought of it this way:

• Some people will pay monthly because they want help getting started.
• Some people will pay yearly because they want regular and priority support.

With that, we assumed that those of you that paid monthly would only pay for a month – maybe two.

We were wrong.

Sure, some folks did that, but we also noticed others ended up staying a whole year at the monthly rate – which is far more expensive than paying the yearly fee.

We like money, just like everyone else, but we never want people to look back and regret their experience with Easy Digital Downloads. Ever.

The other thing that surprised us was that those who did sign up for the monthly support didn’t end up asking most of their questions in the first few days. It took some folks weeks.

Downloads

Since we launched on the WordPress.org plugin repository two years ago, we have had 278,687 downloads and counting. Currently we are seeing an average of about 500 downloads per day. We reached the 100 thousand on June 7, 2013. It took us 14 months to reach 100 thousand downloads, but only another 10 months to reach 278 thousand. That’s almost twice as many downloads in less time. We can’t be anything but thrilled with that.

Releases

Over the last two years, we have had more than 66 version releases and are rapidly approaching our version 2.0 release. We’re averaging a release about once a month, though sometimes we see a few releases in a single month as we work quickly to make improvements as users notice problems or have requests for how Easy Digital Downloads could be improved.

Ratings and Customer Satisfaction

On WordPress.org, we have 152 5-star ratings. The vast majority of users that leave a review of Easy Digital Downloads give it 5-stars. That means the world to us and are so happy to hear that we’ve managed to build a system that our users love. We never tire of seeing new 5-star ratings come in.

While the vast majority have given us superb ratings, we have also received negative ratings, including 7 4-star reviews, 1 3-star, 1 2-star, and 4 1-star reviews. We take anything less than a 5-star as an indication that something needs to be improved and we seriously take all criticism to heart and work to see how we can improve the pain points for future releases. While we love to hear what we did well, we also need to hear what we did poorly on as that’s how we get better and better.

A few months ago we began actively asking customers to let us know how we did by filling out a customer satisfaction survey. Here are the results to date:

Are there a few that indicated they were downright unpleased? Yes, unfortunately, but the vast majority were thrilled with the level of support they received.

We strive to provide top notch support because we believe it is our obligation to do so and because we truly believe in and stand behind our products. Unfortunately it’s impossible to please everyone, but we will do our very best to fight that impossible battle.

Extension Downloads

Our extensions marketplace is the heart and soul of our business model. The extension sales through this site are what allow us to give away such a feature-rich e-commerce plugin for free. Over the last two years we have seen the adoption rate of Easy Digital Downloads sky rocket, and with it, our extension sales have grown substantially. I remember being thrilled the first time we broke $500 in monthly extension sales; now we’re paying out nearly $20,000 per month in developer commissions. That’s humbling to say the least.

To date, we have delivered more than 19,863 extension file downloads to customers that have purchased one or more extensions.

Support Tickets

Support can make or break a business. I believe the level of dedicated we put towards helping our customers as best we can has dramatically improved our business. Is support difficult? Absolutely. Is it worth it? 100%.

Since opening our support forums with version 1.0, we have had 7,301 tickets opened. In the early days we had an average of a few tickets per week, now we see an average of 20 new tickets per day.

Contributors

One of the most beautiful aspects of open source software is seeing people come together and work as a community. We have an amazing community of users and developers around Easy Digital Downloads.

To date, there are 92 individuals that have contributed to the EDD code base and even more that have contributed bug reports, feature requests, and general suggestions.

We cannot thank you all enough.

Going Forward

We are not even close to being finished. In reality, I’d say we’re just now really getting started. We’re working harder than ever to make Easy Digital Downloads the best and easiest way to sell your digital products through WordPress. While users often tell us EDD is easy, we don’t believe it’s easy enough yet. With “easy” in the name, it’s vitally important that we stand behind that and make it our mantra.

As we’ve added more and more features, there are times we’ve lost sight of what it means to be “easy”. It is my goal to ensure that we not only return to being “easy” but that we succeed with flying colors. Two New Core Developers

During 2013, we added two new core developers to the team: Andrew Munro and Daniel Griffiths. Both of these guys are truly excellent developers that have made numerous significant contributions to Easy Digital Downloads. Andrew is the author of 16 published extensions and Daniel is the author of 8 tremendous extensions (as well as an active contributor to several more). Andrew has made 87 commits to the core EDD code base, and Daniel 106 commits.

It is truly my honor to list both Andrew and Daniel as core developers for Easy Digital Downloads.

Two New Support Team Members

Along with our new core developers, we were also thrilled to welcome two new members of our support team: Blake Pounds and Joel Williams. Each of them brings their own strengths to the table and assist every day to bring you, the users, better and better support response times and experiences. We firmly believe that providing top-notch support to our users, even the unpaid users, is vitally important to the overall success of our platform and the business.

Each of the members of core development team works in the support forum as well, bringing our number of support team members to 8. That’s a pretty big increase from just me, as it was during EDD’s early days, which really wasn’t very long ago.

130 New Extensions Released

During the last 365 days we released 130 new extensions for Easy Digital Downloads. I don’t even know what to say to that, other than “wow”. I never would have imagined in April 2012, when EDD first launched, that we would have 130 extensions built and released in one year. Of this 130, the vast majority are from third-party developers that have chosen to put their valuable development time into building plugins on top of Easy Digital Downloads, and for that, I am truly grateful, and humbled.

17 New Themes Released

Also in the last year, we saw 17 themes for Easy Digital Downloads released. These themes varied from Crowd Funding themes, such as Fundify, to e-book store themes. to “standard” e-commerce themes. One of our main goals for 2014 will be to dramatically increase the number of themes available that provide complete EDD integration and support. Themes have always been our weakest point and we would like to change that, making the process of setting up a new EDD site even easier.

31 Version Releases

I firmly believe that it is our responsibility as developers of an e-commerce platform to iterate quickly and release often. One of the number one reasons to push out a new release is to fix bugs, bugs that may be having negative consequences on the sales and success of thousands of businesses. In 2013, we released 31 updates to the core Easy Digital Downloads plugin. Of these 31 updates, 4 were major releases and 27 were minor “point” releases. New features are generally introduced in major releases and bugs and minor improvements added through point releases.

We plan to continue this trend and always push out updates when they are needed. We believe it’s better for users to update their plugins with the latest patches than it is for them to continue using software with known and fixed bugs. Whether users choose to update is up to them, but we, as the developers, will continue to do our best to ensure the updates are available for those that want or need them.

69 Reviews on WordPress.org

Over the course of the last 365 days, 69 users have submitted reviews to the plugin on WordPress.org. Of these 69, 68 of them were full 5-star reviews, and the one that wasn’t was a 4-star review. For the developers of a platform, receiving solid 5-star reviews is humbling, validating, and awesome. It gives us that extra validation that we are doing something right, and we hope and plan to continue that trend for the next year and years to come.

$63,747.01 Paid Out in Commissions

In 2013, we paid out $63,747.01 in commissions to developers for extension and theme sales. This is an increase of 1129.94% with just $5,182.92 being paid out in 2012. As can be clearly seen in this graph, the commissions we are paying out every month is growing significantly. Do we believe it’s a good time to get involved with Easy Digital Downloads? Certainly.

Over 200 Thousand Downloads to Date

On June 7, 2013 we hit the 100 thousand downloads mark, and just a few short months later we made it to 200 thousand. Here’s to hoping for 500 thousand by the end of 2014.

Up to this point, customers have had the option of purchasing priority support access or purchasing extensions in order to gain access to the priority support forums. Whether a customer paid for a $6 extension or paid $29 for a month of priority support access, the level of support they received was the same, but this is not quite right.

The issue that we have run into is that customers who have purchased minimal extensions and have access to priority support, are able to utilize an unlimited amount of priority support to get even issues unrelated to their extension resolved. This is simply not cost effective.

The original point of giving automatic priority support to extension buyers was so that they could get any issues they encountered with the extensions resolved as quickly as possible. The vast majority of the time, however, the priority support access was used for non-extension related issues, and that’s the primary reason we’re making some changes.

From this point on, extension purchases will not grant access to priority support. That being said, all extension purchases still include unlimited support for the extensions purchased, except it’s limited to the particular extensions that were purchased, instead of being open to all areas of support.

If you need support for an extension that you have purchased, we ask that all questions be asked in the appropriate forum for the particular extension in question. All extension forums are here. We treat all extension-related support requests as priority.

Instead of just having one price option, each extension will have three prices options, one price for each type of license. The license types will be Single Site, 2-5 Sites, and Unlimited Sites (developer’s license).

Important

All existing purchases will be considered as unlimited, meaning that we will not ask you to purchase any extension again if you wish to continue using it on multiple sites.

This pricing change only affects new purchases.

How will it work? Simple, you will be given an option to choose which license type you wish to purchase:

• Single Site – for use on one site
• 2-5 Sites – for use on up to five sites
• Unlimited – for use on any number of sites

What will the actual prices be? Each extension’s price is set depending on what the extension does, but an extension that is currently $49 will have the following prices:

• Single Site – $49
• 2-5 Sites – $82
• Unlimited – $123

Aside from its very specific purpose, one of the things that I feel makes Easy Digital Downloads great is its modularity, which allows for add-on extensions to be built for all kinds of purposes. At the time of writing this, there are already six different add-ons available for download and purchase, and not all of them were written by me! A community of developers is being built around Easy Digital Downloads, which just makes it even better!

Another exciting thing about getting Easy Digital Downloads out the door is that the extensive documentation has also begun getting written. While I don’t have even 1/4 of it done, it is getting there. Once complete, there will be an entire Developer’s API documentation as well, which will make it even easier for other developers to create extensions and add-ons for Easy Digital Downloads.

You can download the latest version of the plugin directly from the WordPress plugin’s repository.

Along with the bug fixes and feature improvements, Easy Digital Downloads has also seen its 7th add-on payment gateway completed today. Once the plugin leaves beta,  the following payment gateways will be available:

• PayPal (included by default)
• Manual (included by default)
• PayPal Pro (add-on)
• PayPal Express  (add-on, included with PayPal Pro)
• Authorize.net (add-on)
• 2Checkout (add-on)
• Stripe.com (add-on)

Several other gateways are planned as well, so within no time at all you will be able to choose from just about any of your favorite payment methods. Benjamin Rojas, from Reality 66 is largely responsible for ever-growing list of payment gateways, so I owe him a huge thanks.

The plugin is extremely powerful and really, really cool. I have worked hard to supply as many of necessary features as possible, while also avoiding the terrible feature bloat that is suffered by so many of the WordPress ecommerce plugins available. Your feedback during this beta stage is very, very important to me, so please feel free to leave as much feedback as possible.

The first beta version of Easy Digital Downloads can be downloaded from the plugin’s Git hub page. If you’re not familiar with GitHub, click “Downloads” on the right side of the screen, this will take to a page where you can download a .zip file.

Please post your bug reports on the github issues page, or in the beta support forum. All feedback that is not a bug report is welcome below.
